Set Your Compass in the Right Direction - only by understanding its purpose can I accurately use the Bible. The purpose of the Bible is simply to proclaim God’s plan to save his children. It asserts that man is lost and needs to be saved. And it communicates the message that Jesus is the God in the flesh sent to save his children. Though the Bible was written over sixteen centuries by at least forty authors, it has one central theme – salvation through faith in Christ. Understanding the purpose of the Bible is like setting the compass in the right direction. Calibrate it correctly and you’ll journey safely. But fail to set it, and who knows where you’ll end up

The problem is not that God hasn’t spoken but that we haven’t listened.

Imagine your reaction if I were to take a telephone book, open it up, and proclaim, I have found a list of everyone who’s on welfare!

Or what if I said, Here is a list of college graduates!

Or, This book will tell us who has a red car.

You’d probably say, “Now wait a minute, that’s not the purpose of that book. You’re holding a telephone book. Its purpose is simply to reveal the name and number of residents of a city during a certain time frame.”

Only by understanding its purpose can I accurately use the telephone book.

Only by understanding its purpose can I accurately use the Bible!

Begun by Moses in the lonely desert of Arabia and finished by John on the lonely Isle of Patmos, it is held together by a strong thread: God’s passion and God’s plan to save his children.

What a vital truth!

Understanding the purpose of the Bible is like setting the compass in the right direction.

Calibrate it correctly and you’ll journey safely.

But fail to set it, and who knows where you’ll end up.

Consider Divine Appointments - life is full of unexpected interruptions. But sometimes, these disruptions are more than just chance occurrences – they are divine appointments, disguised as inconveniences, chance encounters, or sudden changes in plans. Recognizing these moments and being willing to say “yes” to participate in them can lead to profound spiritual growth and blessings. When we are attuned to God’s leading, we can discern his hands at work in these situations. When we embrace these moments, we participate in God’s redemptive work in the lives of others and experience his transformative power in our own lives

Streams in my desert: The Interludes of Life - you couldn't go to sleep, so you turned through the Scriptures and landed on some thoughts that began to make sense. Some of you, in a quiet moment of your life, realized the vocation into which God was calling you. Before long, they stretched into a direct arrow toward some new and exciting objective. It's in the interludes of life that those things happen. You have to slow down and become quiet in those special times to hear His voice, to sense His leading. When it's not of God, it won't come to fulfillment

Streams in my desert: Chasing the God Who’s Chasing You - your Heavenly Father wants to run to you and affectionately embrace you - the Lord is the lover of your soul - He has never stopped pursuing you. When you seek the Lord, you’ll find whatever you need in His presence. The Bible says our pursuit of intimacy with God begins with a revelation that “He first loved us.” Before you or I ever took a step in His direction, Jesus came and pursued a relationship with us. Without waiting for us to clean up our act first, He demonstrated His love on the cross “while we were still sinners”

Streams in my desert: What Is That to You? - for more than thirty years, the apostle Peter followed God as a courageous leader of the early church. He fearlessly embraced death under the evil Emperor Nero. May we too be steadfast and unquestioning in following God, trusting His love and direction. We’re not to compare our path with that of others, but we’re to simply follow Him. He desires our trust

Streams in my desert: Horoscopes - the stars are part of creation. We don’t look to points of light in the sky in order to find direction for our lives. We need to look at the word of God and seek to understand what God is saying for us

Streams in my desert: Tune it all out - the LORD was not in the wind ... was not in the earthquake ... and not in the fire. And after the fire a still small voice. God had something to say to Elijah. He first allowed some powerful and noisy manifestations. God still speaks in that still small voice today. But we are not able to hear Him with all the craziness around us. It is so necessary to tune out the noise so we can hear Him. When God has our full attention, we come to know Him better and receive the direction we've been longing for

Streams in my desert: Jehovah-Nissi: God is My Banner - a banner or flag was a standard raised high during battles symbolizing victory, rallying troops and serving as a point of focus. The act of raising a banner is an act of proclamation and trust. Our God is our protector and leader. A banner also serves as a guide, indicating direction and leadership. If we look to God, we will find direction and support. Banners often represent identity and unity for a group. By declaring God as our banner, we affirm identity in Him and our collective faith and dependence on God

Streams in my desert: Where Are You Heading? - life moves quickly, but people have lost their inner direction. Some start well, knowing where they are heading, but the pleasures of life, the entertainments along the way, and the worries and anxieties eventually draw them off their original path. They have lost their way. Jesus taught that our ultimate destination is the heavenly Father’s house. That is possible only if we place our faith in Christ. This is the only destination that is worth living and dying for, the only one that offers eternal life. All others are dead ends

Streams in my desert: When God Makes Us Wait - the Lord is ready and willing to offer direction. But He doesn’t always give it when or how we expect. By aligning our steps with His and walking in submission to the Spirit, we open our ears to hear His voice. Our waiting period is God’s preparation time. He may be coordinating events to line up with His will. Waiting helps strengthen us spiritually - if we instantly received His direction, we would rarely have the opportunity to exercise our faith. By waiting until He gives clear direction, you will walk in His peace with certainty
