Walking in the Dark - the Christian life is a walk of faith and not of feeling. We need to learn to walk by faith - it is possible to live a godly life in an ungodly world

“But those who trust in the LORD will find new strength. They will soar high on wings like eagles. They will run and not grow weary. They will walk and not faint.” Isaiah 40:31

There’s a time for running and a time for walking. And most of the time, it’s a lot easier to walk than to run.

The Bible uses the metaphor of walking as well as running, and in the Book of Isaiah, we find this promise: “But those who trust in the Lord will find new strength. They will soar high on wings like eagles. They will run and not grow weary. They will walk and not faint” (Isaiah 40:31 NLT).

In the race of life, the objective is not to run fast; it’s to run long.

The objective is to cross the finish line.

The apostle Paul wrote, “I press on to reach the end of the race and receive the heavenly prize for which God, through Christ Jesus, is calling us” (Philippians 3:14 NLT).

Then Paul added this thought: “Let all who are spiritually mature agree on these things” (verse 15 NLT).

In other words, he was saying that if we want to grow spiritually, then we need to learn how to pace ourselves in the race of life.

Some people seem to have a yo-yo type of relationship with God. Either they are fully passionate, or they are half-hearted.

One day they are so excited about Jesus that it borders on being obnoxious. But another day they’re depressed and struggling with sin.

We need to learn how to pace ourselves. We need to learn how to find consistency.

That is why, after his sin with Bathsheba, King David prayed, “Create in me a clean heart, O God. Renew a loyal spirit within me” (Psalm 51:10 NLT).

David was saying, “Help me to be consistent.” And that is what we need in our lives too.

When we first come to Christ, there is initial excitement. There’s joy and peace. That is not to suggest those things go away.

But it is to say that sooner or later, we must learn that the Christian life is a walk of faith and not of feeling. Feelings will come and go.

Therefore, we need to learn to walk by faith.

That is what a man named Enoch did. In fact, the Bible tells us that he walked with God for 300 years. He walked with God when most others would not.

And his story teaches us how we can not only win the race of life but also keep going, even when things get hard.

Enoch lived during the time before God’s judgment on the earth by the Flood.

The Bible says of this time, “The Lord observed the extent of human wickedness on the earth, and he saw that everything they thought or imagined was consistently and totally evil” (Genesis 6:5 NLT).

People were extremely wicked — so wicked, in fact, that God said He was sorry that He had ever made them.
Yet in the midst of this dark world was someone who walked with God.

Enoch showed us that it is possible to live a godly life in an ungodly world.

Be an Eagle Christian - the eagle doesn't have an identity crisis. He knows what manner of creature he is and what he is able to do. He knows that he can hunt skillfully for prey or simply soar majestically in the sky. We need to become just like "eagle" Christians — fearless and confident in the face of adversity, snatching victory from defeat as we soar to greater heights. We can know who we are in Christ and what we have in Him, where we're going in God, and how we're going to get there. We can live in continual victory as we apply those spiritual truths to our lives. It's not enough to just know the Word. You have to act like the Word is so; that's the only way to experience real victory

There are two distinct characteristics about the eagle in the storm: He shows utter fearlessness in the face of destruction.

He has the ability to soar.

He knows what manner of creature he is and what he is able to do.

He knows that he can hunt skillfully for prey or simply soar majestically in the sky.

And that's the way he lives.

How Do You Live?

But did you know that through the Word of God, you and I can know who we are too!

We can know who we are in Christ and what we have in Him, where we're going in God, and how we're going to get there.

In addition, we can live in continual victory as we apply those spiritual truths to our lives.

That's the way the eagle Christian lives.

But too many times I hear folks say, "I know what the Word says, but I just don't know whether I'm really an overcomer or not."

It's not enough to just know the Word.

You have to act like the Word is so; that's the only way to experience real victory.

Now I am not saying that you're not a Christian unless you're living like an overcomer.

Certainly you're a Christian if you've received Jesus Christ as your Savior, but I want to encourage you to be an eagle Christian!

Grow in His Strength - God delights to conduct the tender nestlings of His care to the very edge of the precipice, and even to thrust them off into the steeps of air, that they may learn their possession of unrealized power of flight. And if, they be exposed to unwonted peril, He is prepared to swoop beneath them, and to bear them upward on His mighty pinions. When God brings any of His children into a position of unparalleled difficulty, they may always count upon Him to deliver them. When God puts a burden upon you He puts His own arm underneath. God may take away your comforts and your privileges, to make you the better Christian

In Me in me you may have perfect peace - there is a vast difference between happiness and blessedness. Paul had imprisonments and pains, sacrifice and suffering up to the very limit; but in the midst of it all, he was blessed. All the beatitudes came into his heart and life in the midst of those very conditions. It is your mission, tested and tried one, to walk out on the stage of this world and reveal to all earth and Heaven that the music is not in conditions, not in the things, not in externals, but the music of life is in your own soul. There is a vast difference between happiness and blessedness. "In this world you will have trouble. But take heart. I have overcome the world”

Satan Has But a Short Time - God’s care is always at hand to deliver His own. He has His prepared places, where He hides those who trust in Him. He keeps them in the secret of His pavilion from the strife of men. We overcome only in so far as we take shelter in the blood of the Lamb and wield as our weapon the Word of God. As darkness cannot resist the light, so evil cannot exist before the witness of the Church and the child of God, if only we care more for the honor and glory of Christ than for our own lives. To the end there must be war between the seed of the woman and the dragon, and there must be bruising. But the final outcome is sure. As Satan was cast out of heaven, so he shall be cast out of earth

Circle of the Earth - God revealed to ancient Israel something of the physical layout of the universe long before anyone had discovered that the earth was round. As scientific discoveries were made, the Bible was shown to be incredibly correct, recording truth that only God could have known. The Lord sits above the circle of the earth. The point of the “circle of the earth” passage is that God is far above all the petty affairs of petty people. He is not troubled by them, and He can bring them to an end at any time. He can also protect and strengthen His people. The verse is supposed to be a comfort to God’s people as they contemplate the greatness and the creative power of God

What is the circle of the earth (Isaiah 40:22)?

The reference to the “circle of the earth” in Isaiah 40:22 is the source of much speculation.

Some see this phrase as evidence that God revealed to ancient Israel something of the physical layout of the universe long before anyone had discovered that the earth was round.

Later, as scientific discoveries were made, the Bible was shown to be incredibly correct, recording truth that only God could have known

According to this view, the Scripture is demonstrated to have a divine origin by revealing “scientific secrets” before they were commonly known.

The Bible speaks of the rising and setting of the sun (as do we), but it is simply the language of appearance and not intended to communicate scientific accuracy (see Psalm 113:3.)

The Bible also speaks of the “four corners of the earth,” yet no one thinks that the Bible is teaching that the earth is square (see Isaiah 11:12).

Proverbs 30:4 speaks of the “ends of the earth,” an expression we still use today to refer to the remotest extremes.

The problem with the “scientific secrets” approach is that it reads scientific precision into certain passages that seem to fit our modern scientific concepts while ascribing phenomenological language (language of appearance) or metaphor to those passages that do not.

To be consistent, it would seem that all such passages should either be interpreted literally or metaphorically.

If they are all interpreted literally, then there would be far more scientific inaccuracies than accuracies or “scientific secrets.”

If they are all interpreted metaphorically or phenomenologically, then each of the passages would still make sense in its original context.

Isaiah 40:22, with its reference to the “circle of the earth,” is just one example.

The first point to understand regarding the “circle” is that the word (Hebrew root chug) does not mean “sphere” but rather refers to a circle or sometimes a dome.

A circle is flat like a disc or a dinner plate.

Those who hold to the “scientific secrets” approach often think “sphere” when they hear “circle.”

In the Old Testament, the word is used once as a verb in Job 26:10: “He has inscribed a circle on the face of the waters at the boundary between light and darkness” (ESV).

If one looks at the earth from space, there is indeed a circular boundary between light and darkness.

However, the NIV captures more of the original intent and avoids the use of the word circle altogether: “He marks out the horizon on the face of the waters for a boundary between light and darkness.”

If one is looking out at the sea, the horizon does appear to be circular.

The same Hebrew word is used three times in the Bible as a noun.

In Job 22:14, God is described as walking in the “circuit of heaven” (KJV).

Most modern translations translate it as “the vault of heaven.”

If taken literally, this verse would be scientifically inaccurate because there is no vault over the earth.

The universe goes out billions of miles in all directions, but, in staring up at the sky on a starry night, we do see the sky as a circular dome overhead with definite boundaries.

In Proverbs 8:27, “Wisdom” says, “When he established the heavens, I was there; when he drew a circle on the face of the deep” (ESV).

The NIV translation communicates the meaning of “drawing a circle on the face of the deep”: “I was there when he set the heavens in place, when he marked out the horizon on the face of the deep.”

There is no “circle” drawn on the sea, but there is a horizon that has a circular appearance as one looks out on the sea.

Isaiah 40:22 says, “He sits enthroned above the circle of the earth, and its people are like grasshoppers.

"He stretches out the heavens like a canopy, and spreads them out like a tent to live in.”

Even if “circle of the earth” is taken literally in this verse, it does not say that the earth is a sphere.

Actually, it does not even say that the earth is a circle.

The “circle of the earth” seems to refer to the heavens that appear to be a circular dome overhead.

The parallelism of Hebrew poetry would indicate that the “circle of the earth” is the same as the “canopy” being stretched out.

The heavens are pictured as a tent for the multitudes of earth to live in.

In Isaiah 44:13 a variant of the word is translated in the ESV as “compass”

“The [human] carpenter stretches a line; he marks it out with a pencil.

"He shapes it with planes and marks it with a compass. He shapes it into the figure of a man, with the beauty of a man, to dwell in a house.”

Here, the compass is an instrument used for drawing a circle, and such instruments are still in use today.

The word circle was an apt way to describe the horizon and the heavens overhead.

The horizon goes out in all directions, and the sky overhead seems to meet it, forming a circular dome.

This is purely the language of appearance.

The Bible is not leaving scientific clues to its divine origin.

Isaiah 40:22 is part of a passage that is communicating a truth far more important:

“Do you not know?

Have you not heard?

Has it not been told you from the beginning?

Have you not understood since the earth was founded?

He sits enthroned above the circle of the earth,

and its people are like grasshoppers.

He stretches out the heavens like a canopy,

and spreads them out like a tent to live in.

He brings princes to naught

and reduces the rulers of this world to nothing.

No sooner are they planted,

no sooner are they sown,

no sooner do they take root in the ground,

than he blows on them and they wither,

and a whirlwind sweeps them away like chaff” - (Isaiah 40:21–24).

The point of the “circle of the earth” passage is that God is far above all the petty affairs of petty people.

He is not troubled by them, and He can bring them to an end at any time. He can also protect and strengthen His people:

“Do you not know?

Have you not heard?

The LORD is the everlasting God,

the Creator of the ends of the earth.

He will not grow tired or weary,

and his understanding no one can fathom.

He gives strength to the weary

and increases the power of the weak.

Even youths grow tired and weary,

and young men stumble and fall;

but those who hope in the LORD

will renew their strength.

They will soar on wings like eagles;

they will run and not grow weary,

they will walk and not be faint” - (Isaiah 40:28–31).

The Lord sits above the circle of the earth!

Rather than being a source of secret scientific knowledge or a point of contention between young earth and old earth creationists, the verse is supposed to be a comfort to God’s people as they contemplate the greatness and the creative power of God.

As Isaiah 40:1 says, “Comfort, comfort my people, says your God.”

The comfort is found in the content of Isaiah 40 and the subsequent chapters.

Young Earth - people reject belief in God because their hearts are hard, and their eyes are blinded to the truth. Their problem is not with creationism but with God. The issue is their hatred of God, not the age of the earth. They are without excuse. Young earth creationism is what the Bible teaches. Genesis 1 refers to literal, 24-hour days. A normal reading of the text is that God created the universe, the earth, and everything in it in six 24-hour days. The Bible teaches that the earth was created thousands - not billions - of years ago. "For although they knew God, they neither glorified him as God nor gave thanks to him, but their thinking became futile and their foolish hearts were darkened

Life From Outer Space - the optimum place for life as we know it on Earth to exist elsewhere in space would be a planet with features just like those of Earth. These include having a stable star very like our own sun, being the right distance from its sun, as well as having an orbit and speed of rotation that would maintain a suitable temperature range. Another essential would be the presence of liquid water. Also needed would be a non-poisonous atmosphere which would also absorb or deflect lethal doses of ultraviolet light, X-rays, and gamma rays, as well as a magnetic field strong enough to deflect the solar wind. Complex life forms would need oxygen to be present in the right proportion. Earth is just right for life

Angels on the New Earth - angels will continue to serve Jesus and His people on the New Earth. How great it will be to get to know these brilliant ancient creatures who’ve lived with God from their creation. They may have witnessed virtually every moment of our lives. They’ve guarded us, gone to fierce battle for us, served as God’s agents in answer to prayers. Besides God himself, no one could know us better. Nothing will separate us from God, and nothing will separate Earth and Heaven. Once God and mankind dwell together, there will be no difference between Heaven and Earth. Earth will become Heaven — and it will truly be Heaven on Earth. The New Earth will be God’s dwelling place

"As an eagle stirreth up her nest, fluttereth over her young, spreadeth abroad her wings, taketh them, beareth them on her wings: so the Lord alone did lead him, and there was no strange God with him" — Deuteronomy 32:11-12

"Our Almighty Parent delights to conduct the tender nestlings of His care to the very edge of the precipice, and even to thrust them off into the steeps of air, that they may learn their possession of unrealized power of flight, to be forever a luxury; and if, in the attempt, they be exposed to unwonted peril, He is prepared to swoop beneath them, and to bear them upward on His mighty pinions.

"When God brings any of His children into a position of unparalleled difficulty, they may always count upon Him to deliver them." — The Song of Victory

“When God puts a burden upon you He puts His own arm underneath.”

There is a little plant, small and stunted, growing under the shade of a broad-spreading oak; and this little plant values the shade which covers it, and greatly does it esteem the quiet rest which its noble friend affords.

But a blessing is designed for this little plant.

Once upon a time there comes along the woodman, and with his sharp axe he fells the oak.

The plant weeps and cries, “My shelter is departed; every rough wind will blow upon me, and every storm will seek to uproot me!”

“No, no,” saith the angel of that flower; “now will the sun get at thee; now will the shower fall on thee in more copious abundance than before; now thy stunted form shall spring up into loveliness, and thy flower, which could never have expanded itself to perfection shall now laugh in the sunshine, and men shall say, ’How greatly hath that plant increased!
"How glorious hath become its beauty, through the removal of that which was its shade and its delight!’”

See you not, then, that God may take away your comforts and your privileges, to make you the better Christians?

He makes them ford through streams, and swim through rivers, and climb mountains, and walk many a long march with heavy knapsacks of sorrow on their backs.

This is the way in which He makes them soldiers — not by dressing them up in fine uniforms, to swagger at the barrack gates, and to be fine gentlemen in the eyes of the loungers in the park.

We may grow the stuff of which soldiers are made; but warriors are really educated by the smell of powder, in the midst of whizzing bullets and roaring cannonades, not in soft and peaceful times.

Well, Christian, may not this account for it all?

Is not thy Lord bringing out thy graces and making them grow?

Is He not developing in you the qualities of the soldier by throwing you into the heat of battle, and should you not use every appliance to come off conqueror?

The Power of Love - God wants us to have power. But He has to be sure we'll use that power in love. He wants to know that we won't take it and mix it with judgment and criticism and blast people out of the water. Rise Up on the Wings of Faith - faith truly does come by hearing and hearing by the Word of God. And it is our faith - not just our prayers - that moves the hand of God. It is faith that moves the mountains in our lives. Rise up on spiritual wings and begin to see things from God's perspective - pray from above that mountain and command it to move. Deal with it exactly like God would because you’ve risen up in faith and joined yourself in agreement with Him

"But those who wait for the Lord [who expect, look for, and hope in Him] shall change and renew their strength and power; they shall lift their wings and mount up [close to God] as eagles [mount up to the sun]; they shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint or become tired."Isaiah 40:31 Amp

In the original Hebrew, the word translated wait means “to be intertwined or braided together with something.”

That puts the concept of waiting on the Lord in a whole new light, doesn’t it?

Think about what happens when you braid two cords together. It becomes difficult to distinguish one from the other.

They become one in form and in strength.

That’s what happens when you take the time to wait on the Lord and meditate on His Word.

You become so braided and intertwined with Him that His strength becomes your strength. His truth becomes your reality.

You rise up on spiritual wings and begin to see things from His perspective.

Instead of praying from down under the mountain trying to chisel your way out of it, you pray from above that mountain and command it to move.

You deal with it exactly like God would because you’ve risen up in faith and joined yourself in agreement with Him.

Let me ask you something, dear pray-er.

Are there some prayers you have prayed that haven’t yet been answered?

Are there some requests you have made that have brought no results?

If so, then join me in making a fresh commitment to spend more time meditating and fellowshipping with the Lord over His Word.

Determine to invest more time intertwining yourself with that Word and listening with the ears of your heart for the voice of the Lord.

For faith truly does come by hearing and hearing by the Word of God.

And it is our faith — not just our prayers — that moves the hand of God.

It is faith that moves the mountains in our lives.
