God’s Favor - a lot of us are like Mary. We would like to see our circumstances transformed. Bible scholars think Mary was very young, probably a teenager. She was a simple girl from an obscure village and family. Living in a male-dominated culture, she had little influence and probably few expectations for her life. Like Mary, we think, “Lord, my life doesn’t reflect your favor at all. I need you to bring your light into it.” How would we feel if we heard a voice from heaven telling us, “You have God’s favor”? Be encouraged. God is looking to favor you, especially if you will cry out like Mary: “My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior”

Does God give favor, bless abundantly and lavish his grace on hungry, waiting hearts?

The answer is yes, and we find this illustrated in the first chapter of Luke.

An angel appeared to Mary to announce the amazing events about to take place in her life.

“… The angel Gabriel was sent from God to a city of Galilee named Nazareth, to a virgin betrothed to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David.

"And the virgin’s name was Mary.

"And he came to her and said, ‘Greetings, O favored one, the Lord is with you!’

"But she was greatly troubled at the saying, and tried to discern what sort of greeting this might be” - (Luke 1:26-29, ESV).

Bible scholars think Mary was very young, probably a teenager.

Imagine how strange this encounter had to be for her.

She was a simple girl from an obscure village and family, and an angel stood before her:

“The angel said to her, ‘Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God.

"And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus’” - (Luke 1:30-31).

Mary seemed uncertain about what she was hearing, which is understandable.

Living in a male-dominated culture, she had little influence and probably few expectations for her life.

She would have all the privileges of being a good wife and mother but nothing beyond that.

A lot of us are like Mary.

We would like to see our circumstances transformed.

We want to see our sick relative healed.

We long for our troubled child to find purpose in Christ or for our tense marriage to be restored to its former joy.

Like Mary, we think, “Lord, my life doesn’t reflect your favor at all. I need you to bring your light into it.”

How would we feel if we heard a voice from heaven telling us, “You have God’s favor”?

Be encouraged!

God is looking to favor you, especially if you will cry out like Mary:

“My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior” - (Luke 1:46-47).

The Year of the Lord’s Favor - Jesus taught plainly that the year of grace that Isaiah foretold was now here. He had come as God’s Anointed One to provide blessings to His people, to fix what sin had broken, to repair our inward beings and to restore our outward circumstances. He has repaired our inward beings by His death on the cross. He is coming again soon to restore our outward circumstances by making all things new. And He will finish His restoring work when He returns to raise us with Him for blessed life in the new creation

Jesus Promised a White Stone - when Christ offered “a stone, a white one” to overcomers it meant: “I have reviewed all the evidence, and I have judged you not guilty.” Regardless of who they had been or what they had done before they came to Christ, what mattered now was who they had become in Christ. When the devil — or any person, for that matter — tries to throw a stone of judgment against us by mentally tormenting us about past actions we’ve already been forgiven for, we may boldly answer, “Christ has already cast His vote. He has found me NOT GUILTY”

Look Up! The Windows of Heaven are Open - a window of opportunity speaks of a moment of possibility, within our grasp. But Heaven’s windows are not like earthly windows. They are not fragile or limited. They are not bound by time. A door may be closed in front of you, but your Father has a supply above you. Today, wherever you are, no matter what's taking place. Look up. There’s a miracle in Heaven’s window above you. Heaven’s open windows are more powerful than earth’s closed

Streams in my desert: Heaven Opened - Christ promised a future reality in which He Himself would be the ladder to the opened heaven. Since that day when Christ ascended back to heaven, “to be absent from the body” is “to be present with the Lord.” Heaven someday will even receive our resurrected bodies. Heaven thenceforth will be open eternally to all the redeemed

Streams in my desert: You Can Open That Door - deep within our hearts, each of us knows there must be an answer to the problem we face. But often it seems to be out of reach, hidden behind a door that's locked tightly against us. There's no situation so dark and so cleverly designed by the forces of darkness that there is not a kingdom key that will unlock it with kingdom power

Streams in my desert: Your Open Door for Blessings - don’t ever think that you’re destined to remain on a treadmill of sorrows. God has given you the capability to learn from your past regrets and move forward into His promises. Make a decision to be joyful no matter the circumstances, and always be grateful for the person God made you to be. Live life to the fullest, and enjoy every part of what He’s doing in you and through you today

Streams in my desert: Abundance of Rain - it’s through our worship and adoration that we experience and are drawn more and more into all of the manifestations of God’s presence. The cloud of God’s favor opens up, and begins to pour over our life, equipping, anointing and enriching us. The rain of God is God Himself and everything that comes along with Him. It’s healing, peace, goodness, forgiveness, self-esteem, joy and so much more. There is transforming power in the declaration of praise

Streams in my desert: It’s Raining - every time you declare favor, you're asking for the rain. Rain in the Scripture represents God's favor. If you keep declaring favor, God is about to show out in your life and do something unusual, something you weren't expecting. You may not be able to see it, but right now there's good news: It's raining - raining healing, raining freedom, raining promotion, raining connections, raining creativity. God is showering down His favor like never before

Christmas And Our New Birth - His Birth and Our New Birth - His Birth and Our New Birth - just as our Lord came into human history from outside it, He must also come into me from outside. I cannot enter the realm of the kingdom of God unless I am born again from above by a birth totally unlike physical birth. “You must be born again” This is not a command, but a fact based on the authority of God. The evidence of the new birth is that I yield myself so completely to God that “Christ is formed” in me. And once “Christ is formed” in me, His nature immediately begins to work through me

"Behold, the virgin shall be with child, and bear a Son, and they shall call His name Immanuel," which is translated, "God with us." - Matthew 1:23

His Birth in History.

“… that Holy One who is to be born will be called the Son of God” - (Luke 1:35).

Jesus Christ was born into this world, not from it.

He did not emerge out of history; He came into history from the outside.

Jesus Christ is not the best human being the human race can boast of — He is a Being for whom the human race can take no credit at all.

He is not man becoming God, but God Incarnate — God coming into human flesh from outside it.

His life is the highest and the holiest entering through the most humble of doors.

Our Lord’s birth was an advent — the appearance of God in human form.

His Birth in Me.

“My little children, for whom I labor in birth again until Christ is formed in you …” - (Galatians 4:19).

Just as our Lord came into human history from outside it, He must also come into me from outside.

Have I allowed my personal human life to become a “Bethlehem” for the Son of God?

I cannot enter the realm of the kingdom of God unless I am born again from above by a birth totally unlike physical birth.

“You must be born again” - (John 3:7).

This is not a command, but a fact based on the authority of God.

The evidence of the new birth is that I yield myself so completely to God that “Christ is formed” in me.

And once “Christ is formed” in me, His nature immediately begins to work through me.

God Evident in the Flesh.

This is what is made so profoundly possible for you and for me through the redemption of man by Jesus Christ.

Sincerity means that the appearance and the reality are exactly the same.

The New Birth - the new birth is a way of describing what happens when a person puts his faith in Jesus - we are reborn spiritually into a new life that is defined by Christ. This new life is possible because of the sacrifice that Jesus made on the cross and completed when He rose from the dead three days later. We have been crucified with Christ and our old selves have died so that we would no longer be slaves to sin, but instead be slaves to Christ. All who put their faith in Him are a new creation - we have been born again or reborn

Jesus Born Of A Virgin - The Virgin Birth - the virgin birth shows that Jesus was truly human and truly divine. The virgin birth establishes the identity of our Lord and Savior. Because of the virgin birth, Jesus did not inherit the curse of depravity that clings to Adam’s race. The virgin birth is necessary to secure both a real human nature and also a completely divine nature. If Joseph was the real father of Jesus, Jesus is not spotless, not innocent, not perfectly holy. And as a result, we have no mediator, no imputation of Christ’s righteousness (because He has no righteousness to impute to us) and no salvation

We Are Children of God - God wants us to have a revelation of him as a father - a heavenly Father. How wonderful to know that he chose each of us to be his child solely on the basis of love and mercy. God not only chose you, but he adopted you as his child. And his Spirit tells you to cry, “Abba” to him, saying, “You have made me a joint-heir, a brother, to Jesus. You are truly mine.” In his mercy he says to you, “I want you — I choose you — because I want to be a father to you.” Lay down all your worldly loves and follow him today

Streams in my desert: Out Of Your Belly Shall Flow Rivers Of Living Water - Christians receive the Holy Spirit into their hearts at the new birth, so the belly here is the heart. Water represents God meeting the needs of people. Water flowing out of the heart implies that Jesus envisioned the effects of that river on those around you. Whenever the Holy Spirit uses you to meet someone’s needs, He has essentially used you to give them living water to drink. You are God’s reservoir of rivers of living water to give drink to those around you

Streams in my desert: Let Your Life Begin Again - a new life is only a prayer away. Today is the day of salvation. When you’ve been born again and made a new creature in Christ you don’t have any past. Your life begins again the day you make Jesus Lord of your life. Then when Satan comes around trying to remind you of what a worm you were before, just tell him he’s knocking on the wrong door. There’s no need to wait any longer. The prison door is open. Walk through to Jesus and let your life begin again today

Streams in my desert: Once Saved always Saved - believers who have assurance of their salvation remain stable during difficult times, they will live with the confidence that God does not change, and therefore, His grace is sufficient in all circumstances and situations. They will also have a practical prayer life, knowing that they can commune with God and approach Him with their requests. They can humbly submit to the mighty keeping power of God within us

Streams in my desert: The Virgin Birth - The Birth of Christ Through Mary or the Incarnation - the doctrine of the virgin birth is one of the foundations and central doctrines of true Christianity. Without it, Christ would be just a "mere man" born of Mary and not the begotten Son of God. If he were anything short of literally God in the flesh, his death would not be able to atone for the sins of all humans who either did or would exist. If Christ were brought into this world as the result of Joseph having sex with Mary, the entire New Testament would be a lie.

Streams in my desert: Take Your Place - when you were born again, you were made the righteousness of God in Christ, God has raised us up to sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus. That was God's purpose at Calvary: to bring us alongside Jesus. To make us what He already was

Immanuel and Jesus - IMMANUEL or Emmanuel means "With us is God" or "God with us. This name given as a prophecy concerning Jesus Christ, because the name, Immanuel, describes that Jesus would be 'God united with man' and showed that 'God would be dwelling with man.' JESUS means "Savior" and was a description of what Immanuel would do and be while He was 'God with us.' He was also going to be the Messiah / Christ (anointed) and Immanuel (God with us). And He also is referred to by other names such as Lord, a King, King of Israel, Son of David, Chosen of God, etc.

Immanuel and Jesus?

Do these names mean the same thing?

The Question

In Isaiah 7:14 It states:

“The virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son and will call him Immanuel.”

But in the New Testament in Luke 1, it says:

“God sent Gabriel to Nazareth and the angel told Mary that she would have a son and to name him Jesus.”

Immanuel and Jesus?

Do the names mean the same thing?

The Answer

Concerning this question about the names Immanuel and Jesus and are they the same ... and why the two names and etc ....

Well ... let's begin by looking at each of these names individually to see what they mean and then we will better understand why Jesus had more than one name.

IMMANUEL (sometimes spelled Emmanuel) in Isaiah 7:14, means "With us is God" or "God with us."

This name given as a prophecy concerning Jesus Christ, because the name, Immanuel, describes that Jesus would be 'God united with man' and showed that 'God would be dwelling with man.'

JESUS means "Savior" and was a description of what Immanuel would do and be while He was 'God with us.'

JESUS is the Greek form of the Hebrew name, JOSHUA (also spelled JESHUA or YESHUA) and is actually a shortened form of Jehoshua which means "Help of Jehovah" or "Savior."

And, while we are on the subject of names ... Jesus also was known by several other names including the name, CHRIST, which means "anointed."

Since Jesus was both a priest and a King and since, among the Jews, priests were anointed as part of their inauguration to their office of priest, then the name, Christ, would indicate to Jews that he was anointed.

In the New Testament, the name, CHRIST, is the same as the Hebrew, MESSIAH, (which also means "anointed").

So, when Mary was told to name Him, Jesus, this was to be his 'proper' name and to signify that He would be the Savior. .

But, He was also going to be the Messiah / Christ (anointed) and Immanuel (God with us).

And He also is referred to by other names such as Lord, a King, King of Israel, Son of David, Chosen of God, etc.

So there is no real problem with the different names being used at different places in the Bible, because they were just signifying different aspects of Who He was and what He would be and do.

God will grant us the ultimate gift, eternal life in His Kingdom through His grace if we repent of our sins and obey His commands .

To experience God as a personal, caring, loving Father, you have to receive Jesus Christ as your personal Lord and Savior. You will become a child of God and begin the fulfillment of the reason you were created by God.

Say the following prayer:

“Father God, I confess I am a sinner and my sins have separated me from You.

I am truly sorry. I now want to turn away from my past sinful life and live a new life pleasing to You.

Please forgive me, and help me avoid sinning again.

I believe that Your Son, Jesus Christ died for my sins, was resurrected from the dead, is alive, and hears my prayer.

I invite Jesus to become the Lord of my life, to rule and reign in my heart from this day forward. Thank You that according to Your Word, I am now Your child, and I am born again.

Please send Your Holy Spirit to help me obey You, and to do Your will for the rest of my life. I promise to study Your Word – the Bible.

Please use me for Your glory.

In Jesus' name I pray. Amen.”

The Virgin Birth - The Birth of Christ Through Mary or the Incarnation - the doctrine of the virgin birth is one of the foundations and central doctrines of true Christianity.

The Birth of Christ Through Mary or the Incarnation

Was Mary a true virgin when she gave birth to Jesus?

Did her conception occur through a supernatural miracle or through a man?

Why does it matter if the Messiah arrived via a virgin or not?

The doctrine of the virgin birth is one of the foundations and central doctrines of true Christianity.

This is why belief in a virgin birth is so critical.

It is a unique Biblical miracle that testifies of His divine origin.

Most Christians, up until the nineteenth century, accepted the Virgin Birth without hesitation until liberal theology began to challenge the Bible's miracles and the divinity of Christ.

Liberal theologians sought to reinterpret Jesus as nothing more than a wise man and good teacher who died in the first century A.D.

They sought to cast doubt on the veracity of the Bible and its miracles like Jesus' entry into the world through a virgin.

Isaiah 7:14 is the only verse in the Old Testament where the miraculous conception and birth of man's Savior is predicted.

It states, "Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a Son, and shall call His name Immanuel” - (Isaiah 7:14 NKJV).

The focus of the attack against the supernatural conception of Christ through Mary centers on the translation of Isaiah 7:14.

The Hebrew word translated "virgin" in the verse is almah (Strong's #H5959).

Some have suggested that almah does not mean a young chaste woman.

They state that Isaiah would have used the Hebrew word bethulah (Strong's #H1330) if he desired to unambiguously write about a young woman who never had sex.

The truth is that almah is the BEST word the prophet Isaiah could have chosen to convey the concept of virginity.

There exists, in the Old Testament, no place where almah requires clarification before it can be translated as referencing a young female of marriageable age.

This is not the case with the word bethulah, which requires clarification (see Genesis 24:16).

The Hebrew word almah is used in only six other places in the Old Testament other than Isaiah 7:14.

In all cases, it references a virgin or 'maid' who is at an age where she can be married and give birth to children.

This is not the case with bethulah, which can refer to a married female (Joel 1:8).

Mary, while she was a virgin betrothed to Joseph, became pregnant with Jesus through the power of the Holy Spirit (Matthew 1:20, Luke 1:31, 34-35).

An angel was sent to Joseph to tell him that Mary's condition did not come through sex but that she would give birth to Christ through a miracle from God (Matthew 1:20-21).

Matthew then quotes Isaiah 7:14, stating "Behold, the virgin (Greek parthenos, Strong's #G3933) shall be with child and shall give birth to a son, and they shall call His name Emmanuel" - (Matthew 1:22-23 HBFV).

The Greek word parthenos is used in eleven other places in the New Testament besides Matthew 1:23 and Luke 1:27.

It is consistently translated as "virgin" or its plural and always refers to someone who is chaste physically or in two cases considered so
spiritually (see 2 Corinthians 11:2, Revelation 14:4).

The Incarnation, or birth of Christ through Mary, was one of the most anticipated events in human history.

Those living in Jerusalem knew the time of the promised Christ was near (Luke 2:38).

Parthian Magi diligently watched for the manifestation of the King of Kings and rejoiced when they were miraculously led to Him who deserves worship (Matthew 2:1-2).

The religious leaders at the temple also awaited the Messiah and knew he would be born in Bethlehem (Matthew 2:4-6).

The virgin birth through Mary of the One named Immanuel (God WITH us) began the Eternal's glorious plan to redeem us from sin and offer us a way to live in love forever.

The First King Size Bed - when Jesus was born, they laid Him in a manger — a feeding trough for animals. The manger was Christ’s bed. It was the very first KING size bed. Christmas is more than a time to remember that Jesus came once. At His first coming, King Jesus came as a servant. But at His second coming, King Jesus will come as rightful Owner and Ruler of the earth. With might and power, the armies of the world are destroyed in the Battle of Armageddon and as He returns John recorded that He has a vesture and on His thigh a name written, “King of Kings, and Lord of Lords”

Signs of Christmas - Immanuel means “God with us,” and the sign of the virgin birth, biologically impossible without a mighty miracle of divine creation, assures us that the omnipotent God has entered the human family once for all. That entrance was made in the very humblest of human circumstances, and this also was a sign. “And this shall be a sign unto you,” said the leader of the angelic host; “Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger.” The God/man would Himself be God’s great sign to Israel and the whole world

The Birth Of The Saviour - misery and wretchedness everywhere, unrest on every land, and yet the angel said, “Peace, goodwill toward men.” Peace was dependent upon receiving the Savior whom God had sent into the world. This is the mystery of the incarnation. The sweetest story ever told - the coming to Earth of our Lord Jesus Christ - He wants to come in and He will come in if you will open the door. The Messiah is coming back again, when the rest of Israel shall return to their God

Streams in my desert: The Sign of Immanuel - a virgin would conceive and give birth to the Saviour Who would be called Immanuel, God with us, God incarnate

Streams in my desert: Highly Favoured - when the angel appeared to Mary and told her she, a virgin, would have a son, she simply questioned how it could happen, saying, "How shall this be, seeing I know not a man?" Instead of taking her out of the plan of God, her words put her into it. She said, "Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it unto me according to thy word." And she was blessed when she experienced the performance of that divine plan according to her faith. Our words make a difference

Streams in my desert: Immanuel - a young woman named Mary “was found to be with child from the Holy Spirit.” Although Isaiah had prophesied hundreds of years before that a virgin would conceive, Joseph was still caught off guard. Until an angel appeared to him in a dream, Joseph could not understand that the ancient prophecy was being fulfilled by his own fiancée. Isaiah’s prophecy contained a new name for God - Immanuel, “God with us.” And when God draws near, unexpected things happen

Highly Favoured - when the angel appeared to Mary and told her she, a virgin, would have a son, she simply questioned how it could happen, saying, "How shall this be, seeing I know not a man?" Instead of taking her out of the plan of God, her words put her into it. She said, "Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it unto me according to thy word." And she was blessed when she experienced the performance of that divine plan according to her faith. Our words make a difference

Be It Unto Me According to Thy Word

"And the angel came in unto her, and said, Hail, thou that art highly favoured, the Lord is with thee: blessed art thou among women. And, behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name Jesus" - (Luke 1:28,31).

When the angel appeared to Mary and told her she, a virgin, would have a son, she didn't say, "I don't believe this."

She didn't say, "Give me a sign that this is really true."

Although she believed the word of the Lord, she simply questioned how it could happen, saying, "How shall this be, seeing I know not a man?" (Luke 1:34).

She was saying, "I don't know how it's going to happen; but you said it, so I believe it."

Verse 38 says, "And Mary said, Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it unto me according to thy word."

The angel Gabriel appeared to both Zacharias and Mary.

He brought the same message to both — the promise of a child.

To Zacharias it was difficult to believe, because he and his wife were old.

To Mary it was impossible to believe, because she was a virgin.

But Zacharias doubted and said, "I don't know whether I can believe that."

He had to have his mouth closed for months so he wouldn't disagree with God's plan.

On the other hand, Mary just said, "I believe it. I don't know how it will work, but be it unto me according to thy word."

Verse 45 gives us the result of Mary's faith:

"Blessed is she that believed: for there shall be a performance of those things which were told her from the Lord."

Our words make a difference.

If Zacharias' words could have fouled up part of God's plan for the entire world, don't you think our words could foul up His plan for our own lives?

But notice what Mary's words accomplished.

Instead of taking her out of the plan of God, her words put her into it!

She said, "Be it unto me according to thy word."

And she was blessed when she experienced the performance of that divine plan according to her faith.

Confession:

"My words cause me to walk in God's plan.

"His Word in my heart and my mouth renews my mind, heals my body and fills my life with joy.

"Be it unto me according to Your Word, Lord!"

Be It Unto Me - Don Moen
lyrics

… God how we thank You for the power of Your word
Thank You that it has the power to wash us
Praise the Lord O my soul and forget not all its benefits
We remember everything You've done for us, God
And we give You thanks tonight
I thank You for giving us Your word

… And be it unto me
According to Your word
According to Your promises
I can stand secure
Carve upon my heart
The truth that sets me free
According to Your word O' Lord
Be it unto me (sing it with me)

… Be it unto me
According to Your word
According to Your promises
I can stand secure
Carve upon my heart
The truth that sets me free
According to Your word O' Lord
Be it unto me

… You promised Your blood will deliver (that's right)
Lord, we believe it's true
You promised us joy like a river
Lord we receive it from You

… These things You have spoken
And You're bringing to pass
This world's disappearing
But Your word will last

… So be it unto me
According to Your word
According to Your promises
I can stand secure
Carve upon my heart
The truth that sets me free
According to Your word O' Lord
Be it unto me

… Ladies sing it
You promised to carry our sorrows
Lord, we believe it's true (that's right)
You've promised unending tomorrows
Lord we receive them from You

… You be our provider
In Your word it's revealed
And by the stripes that You bore
Lord, we have been healed

… So be it unto me
According to Your word (yes)
According to Your promises
I can stand secure
Carve upon my heart
The truth that sets me free (Hallelujah)
According to Your word O' Lord
Be it unto me
According to Your word O' Lord
Be it unto me

… God we bow at the lordship of Your word tonight
Be it unto me according to Your word
I challenge you to say what Mary said
"Be it unto me according to Your word"
Let Your word be birthed in our hearts tonight
Let it come alive within us
