Immanuel - a young woman named Mary “was found to be with child from the Holy Spirit.” Although Isaiah had prophesied hundreds of years before that a virgin would conceive, Joseph was still caught off guard. Until an angel appeared to him in a dream, Joseph could not understand that the ancient prophecy was being fulfilled by his own fiancée. Isaiah’s prophecy contained a new name for God - Immanuel, “God with us.” And when God draws near, unexpected things happen

Read: Matthew 1:18-25

"Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel." - (Isaiah 7:14)

Some things always happen the same way.

The sun comes up in the morning and goes down at night.

Spring turns into summer turns into fall.

A baby grows into a man or a woman; a man and a woman produce a baby.

This is the way of the world.

Except once.

One time in the history of the world, a baby was conceived in a wholly unexpected way.

Before she came together with her betrothed, a young woman named Mary “was found to be with child from the Holy Spirit” - (Matthew 1:18).

Although Isaiah had prophesied hundreds of years before that a virgin would conceive, Joseph was still caught off guard.

Until an angel appeared to him in a dream, Joseph could not understand that the ancient prophecy was being fulfilled by his own fiancée.

How could anyone have expected Isaiah’s words to come to pass in that particularly miraculous and utterly unprecedented way?

But Isaiah’s prophecy contained a new name for God - Immanuel, “God with us” (verse 23).

And when God draws near, unexpected things happen.

“God with us” meant, first of all, that God was with Mary.

Even growing within Mary. What a totally unexpected surprise.

How has God surprised you lately?

How are you longing for God to draw near?

How have you seen evidence that Jesus is present, even now, within you?

This Advent season, watch for God to show up to you in unexpected ways.

Thought to ponder

How have you experienced God’s presence in your life, even in unexpected or challenging times?

Pray about it

As you pray, ask God to surprise you with his nearness.

Action to take

Call or text someone who needs encouragement and be a reminder of God’s “with us” presence for them.

Highly Favoured - when the angel appeared to Mary and told her she, a virgin, would have a son, she simply questioned how it could happen, saying, "How shall this be, seeing I know not a man?" Instead of taking her out of the plan of God, her words put her into it. She said, "Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it unto me according to thy word." And she was blessed when she experienced the performance of that divine plan according to her faith. Our words make a difference

Signs of Christmas - Immanuel means “God with us,” and the sign of the virgin birth, biologically impossible without a mighty miracle of divine creation, assures us that the omnipotent God has entered the human family once for all. That entrance was made in the very humblest of human circumstances, and this also was a sign. “And this shall be a sign unto you,” said the leader of the angelic host; “Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger.” The God/man would Himself be God’s great sign to Israel and the whole world

Nothing Is Impossible - the Bible reminds us that with God nothing is impossible. There is nothing we can imagine or think of that is impossible. All we need is faith, even the size of a tiny mustard seed. The Bible urges us to free ourselves from limits and stop being bound by our finite understanding. Instead, realize God is the Creator. Everything is subject to Him. Draw closer to Him. Read His Word and declare His promises to be true. Think His thoughts. Believe Him to release His power in your life

Streams in my desert: The Sign of Immanuel - a virgin would conceive and give birth to the Saviour Who would be called Immanuel, God with us, God incarnate

Streams in my desert: Mary, Did You Know? - we have a Messiah. His name is Jesus. He is the Savior of the world. He walked on water without a single bit of effort. He came and died to make us new. We really don’t know much about Mary except that she was a virgin and probably in her early teens

Streams in my desert: The angel Gabriel - Gabriel is one of God’s good and holy angels. He appears to at least three people in the Bible. Gabriel’s name means “God is great,” and, as the angel of the annunciation, he is the one who revealed that the Savior was to be called “Jesus.” He has a favored position as an angel who “stands in the presence of God” and he was selected to deliver important messages of God’s particular love and favor to individuals chosen to be part of God’s plan
