"You, 0 God, sent a plentiful rain, whereby You confirmed Your inheritance, when it was weary" - (Psalm 68:9).
Years ago a scholar coined a phrase to describe that state of 20th-century saints who have grown fatigued in the march from earth to heaven.
The expression he used was "pre-millennial weariness."
Not a pre-millennial rapture, but a state of fatigue which settles in on those who have labored long and hard for a lifetime and yet who must still go on waiting for the Lord to return.
This verse recalls marching Israel spending forty years on their journey to the Promised Land.
Weary, worn, beset with problems and difficulties, they fretted with impatience, questioned their leadership, complained about their surroundings.
Morale was low and even Moses could not really answer their constant question, "How much longer?"
It was at this moment of low ebb that the Lord sent a deluge of rain.
One translator calls it "a rain of free gifts."
That's all it took to revive and refresh the souls of the weary pilgrims.
The same principle applies to us today.
The church age has lasted nearly 2000 years now.
Weary hearts are asking, "How much longer?"
The Lord's answer is an invigorating rain of Holy Spirit blessings which the book of Acts calls "rain from heaven and fruitful seasons."
The hymnist spoke for us as he cried out for such "seasons refreshing."
Lord, grant not just "showers of blessings," but send "a plentiful rain!"
