The First and the Last - the disciples believed that they were better than others. This pride in their status had been engrained in them by their society and their religion. That was just how they saw the world. They were Jews, which made them a special people. They were men, which made them better than women. And they were, after all, the chosen Twelve. But Jesus said that for his followers, things are different. In fact, to welcome a little child is to welcome God himself. In other words, not one of us is greater than the one we consider the least. We will never treat God better than we treat those whom we consider to be the least among us

"Sitting down, Jesus called the Twelve and said, 'Anyone who wants to be first must be the very last, and the servant of all.'

"He took a little child whom he placed among them.

"Taking the child in his arms, he said to them, 'Whoever welcomes one of these little children in my name welcomes me; and whoever welcomes me does not welcome me but the one who sent me'” - (Mark 9:35–37, NIV).

Jesus confronted his disciples with the reality that the source of their spiritual weakness was their pride and struggle for supremacy.

They believed that they were better than others.

This pride in their status had been engrained in them by their society and their religion.

That was just how they saw the world.

They were Jews, which made them a special people.

They were men, which made them better than women.

And they were, after all, the chosen Twelve!

Within their culture, apart from people who were diseased or disabled, children had the lowest status at all.

You never recognised or welcomed children.

Instead, you welcomed their parents, and again, it depended on how worthy the parents themselves were!

But Jesus said that for his followers, things are different.

In fact, to welcome a little child is to welcome God himself.

In other words, not one of us is greater than the one we consider the least.

We will never treat God better than we treat those whom we consider to be the least among us.

In our lives we all tend to rank people, even unconsciously, according to who we consider to be worthy and unworthy: people who deserve our kindness, and those who don’t.

REFLECT

Think about who the people are at the bottom of your list.

Strangely enough, they can often be some of the people closest to you.

Pray that God will change your heart toward them.

How can you show them love?

Begin to pray for them.

The Fall of Lucifer - pride is something that we each have to deal with in our own lives. We must invite the Holy Spirit to point out any areas in our lives where we are self-exalting and are standing on common ground with the powers of darkness. We must allow the blood of Jesus to cleanse us. We are to be grateful for fresh and new opportunities each day to serve Him and others. We can say confidently that we are more than triumphant conquerors in Christ Jesus as we humbly submit to His Lordship in our lives. To Him be the glory and honor for every victory

Stay on guard - even the best of us struggle with pride in our lives. Come to think of it - it's most likely the best of us that struggle with pride the most. There is perhaps no one of our natural passions so hard to subdue as pride. Beat it down, stifle it, mortify it as much as one pleases, it is still alive. The enemy of our souls would like nothing more than to cause us to stumble - especially in the areas we feel most secure. We need to be on guard. Let's never put our hope in our own strengths, or anyone else's for that matter. We must remind ourselves continuously that it is the Lord who is our strength, and He alone

The Heart of the King - Nebuchadnezzar was king of Babylon. He was an ungodly ruler of an ungodly nation. One day he cried out to God and God heard him. God intervened repeatedly in Nebuchadnezzar’s life and heard him when he finally cried out for help. Because he had God’s people under his control. That same principle still holds true today. If we’ll open the way through prayer, God will deal with our leaders. If we will humble ourselves in unity and pray, God can change the injustice and corruption that exist in our country or any country for that matter

Streams in my desert: The Pride of Life - pride of life can be defined as anything that is “of the world,” that leads to arrogance, ostentation, pride in self, presumption, and boasting - offers the illusion of God-like qualities. The pride of life stands in our way if we truly seek to be servants of God. It is the arrogance that separates us from others and limits our effectiveness in the kingdom. The pride of life “comes not from the Father, but from the world.” Perhaps the most evil temptation is the pride of life, the very sin that resulted in Satan’s expulsion from heaven

Streams in my desert: Beware the Fall - pride will bring you down. Men like Nebuchadnezzar, Alexander the Great, and Napoleon Bonaparte were undone by pride. Uzziah won great battles and accomplished many amazing things. Uzziah became a very wealthy, powerful, and famous king. Then it all came undone. Uzziah let his importance go to his head and began to think he was above following God’s commands. "Pride goes before destruction." This profound proverb teaches a vital truth. Pride will bring you down

Streams in my desert: Guard Against Deception - the Christian life is a constant struggle against Satan, who is trying to corrupt us. Most Christians are aware of the warfare, but they don't know where the warfare is occurring. Deception can be avoided. The battle is in our mind. Satan can only deceive those who allow him to do it. Satan tries to corrupt us through thoughts contrary to the gospel. Satan's original tactic was deception and that is still his method of operation today. Anyone who is truly grounded in the Word of God will not be deceived

Streams in my desert: Adding to God’s Word - when John completed the Apocalypse, he was very old; all the other apostles and prophets of the New Testament had already died, so God’s written Word was now complete. No new revelation would be needed before Christ returns. We shall do well if we just learn what we already have received from His holy apostles and prophets. Jesus warned about “false prophets” who would come after He left. The Bible as we now have it is sufficient for every need

Streams in my desert: Apostles Today - Jesus chose only 12 people to have the special designation of becoming an apostle. A true apostle had to be someone who followed Jesus during His entire earthly ministry beginning from Jesus’ baptism to Jesus’ ascension into Heaven. The foundation of the Church is already built with Jesus Christ as its chief cornerstone. The office of apostle and prophet ceased almost 2000 years ago because the canon of scripture is complete
