The Noahic Covenant - the Noahic covenant is God’s promise never to destroy the earth with a flood. The rainbow is a sign of the Noahic covenant, reminding us that God keeps His promises. Salvation from future judgment is available through faith in Jesus Christ just as Noahic trusted in God to save him and his family from the flood. Just as God promised never to destroy the world again with a flood, we can trust His promises of salvation and restoration through Jesus Christ. We can see the rainbow and remember that God keeps His promises. The Noahic covenant invites us to live with hope and faith in God’s ultimate plan, knowing that He is always working for the good of those who love Him

The Noahic Covenant – What is it?

What does the bible say?

The Noahic covenant is an unconditional or unilateral covenant between God and man.

It is a promise made by God to the human race never again to destroy the world with a flood.

The promise was made to "every living creature" on the earth.

Because the covenant is unilateral, responsibility to fulfill the covenant lies entirely upon one party, rather than both parties in the agreement.

In the case of the Noahic covenant, the only responsible party is God.

God's promise in the Noahic covenant to never again destroy the world with a flood is sealed with the sign of the rainbow (Genesis 9:8-17).

From the Old Testament

Genesis chapter 6 records God's determination to destroy the earth, and all living creatures upon the earth, with a worldwide flood.

In that time, God saw that men were evil; in fact, man was so evil that "every intention of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually" - (Genesis 6:5).

God regretted creating mankind and was "grieved to his heart" - (Genesis 6:6).

He decided to blot them out, all the people and animals, because He was sorry for making them (Genesis 6:7).

But Noah found favor in God's eyes because he was righteous and "blameless in his generation" - (Genesis 6:8-9; 7:1).

God saved Noah and his family, and two of each of the species of animals that existed during that time.

Even though God was sorry for creating man, and meant to destroy them all, He preserved mankind through Noah.

After the flood was over, God made the Noahic covenant, and promised never again to destroy the race with a flood.

As a sign of His promise, He "set [the] rainbow in the clouds" - (Genesis 9:12-13 NIV).

From the New Testament

God will once again destroy the earth, as a judgment on sin, with fire (2 Peter 3:10-11; Revelation 20:9, 21:1) on the "day of the Lord."

But there is a way out for those who would believe — Jesus Christ is a shelter for any who will trust Him.

Just as the animals came to the ark for salvation from the rising waters,

- we can come to Christ for salvation from spiritual death and destruction (Romans 8:1), and

- from the eventual judgment which will come to the earth (1 Thessalonians 1:10).

Implications for today

The Noahic Covenant serves as a powerful reminder of God’s grace and faithfulness.

Despite humanity’s sin and rebellion, God chose to preserve life through Noah and his family.

The Noahic covenant is a call for us today to trust in God’s sovereignty and His plans, even when we face challenges or when it seems the world is in chaos.

Just as God promised never to destroy the world again with a flood, we can trust His promises of salvation and restoration through Jesus Christ.

We can see the rainbow and remember that God keeps His promises.

The Noahic covenant invites us to live with hope and faith in God’s ultimate plan, knowing that He is always working for the good of those who love Him (Romans 8:28).

Understand

The Noahic covenant is God’s promise never to destroy the earth with a flood.

The rainbow is a sign of the Noahic covenant, reminding us that God keeps His promises.

Salvation from future judgment is available through faith in Jesus Christ just as Noahic trusted in God to save him and his family from the flood.

Reflect

How does the Noahic covenant strengthen your trust in God’s promises when facing uncertainty?

When have you experienced a reminder, like a rainbow, of God’s faithfulness in your life?

How can you reflect God’s grace and faithfulness to save?

Engage

How does the Noahic covenant teach us about God’s character?

Why is it significant that the Noahic covenant is unconditional and relies solely on God’s faithfulness?

How can the rainbow serve as a meaningful symbol of hope and assurance in challenging times?

Old Testament Laws - some of the Old Testament laws apply today. God is the only One who can change divine commands. When we come to the New Testament, we find that God has replaced many of them but not all of the Old Testament laws. The Mosaic Law, also known as the Old Covenant, was replaced by Jesus Christ with the New Covenant. God eliminated many of the old commandments. God has established new ones while keeping some of the old ones. The greatest change was Jesus, the perfect, sinless sacrifice who abolished the animal sacrifices. Salvation comes only by faith in Jesus Christ

The New Man - the New Covenant is the end of the “can do” man in us who says, “I can do it all in my own strength. The New Covenant is the secret to having an overcoming life in the last days. As the time of Christ’s return draws near, the devil is going to let loose wild, demonic powers against God’s people, such as the world has never seen. Sadly, undiscerning Christians are swallowing it. Multitudes of deception and heresies are swirling through the church. How will believers be able to stand in such times? The Lord answers us by promising to take on the problem himself. He assures us, “Don’t be afraid

Streams in my desert: A Covenant-Keeping God - Jesus offers humanity a covenant of grace. He kept His part of the covenant when He died on the cross. When an individual accepts Him, the individual’s part is fulfilled

Streams in my desert: Transformed from glory to glory - the Old Covenant was written by God’s own finger. That root of our Christian faith is glorious, indeed; it’s the glory we’re coming “from.” Yet the New Covenant, the glory we’re going “to,” far surpasses that of the Old. The transformation is from the glory of the Law. Like the stone it was written on, the Law was inflexible and absolute, without much regard for individual circumstances. The Law was the letter that kills us. The Law was an external force to control behavior - it is earthly and will eventually wear away. The transformation is to the glory of the New Covenant, which far surpasses the Old in every way. It forgives us of our sin and gives us life. It is written on our hearts by the Holy Spirit. The Lord is taking us on “from glory to glory”

Streams in my desert: Yom Kippur and the Sacrifice of Jesus - in the Old Covenant, the High Priest had to make this sacrifice once a year on the Day of Atonement. There was no end to this ritual, because the blood of bulls and goats was not sufficient to cover the sins of the people. Jesus became our High Priest and poured out his blood in the heavenly Holy of Holies once, for all time – and for all of mankind. The New Covenant is unbreakable because it was made between the Son of God and the Son of Man – Jesus representing both God and mankind – and it is sealed in the sinless, spotless blood of Christ
